UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)

General information about the organization

  • Establishment day: in 1947;
  • Member States: 53 member states and 9 associate members;
  • Areas of Activity: The scope of UNESCAP's activities includes issues such as macroeconomic policy and development, trade and investment, transport, social development, environment and sustainable development, information and communication technologies and disaster risk reduction, statistics, and sub-regional action for development.
  • Purpose: cooperation for the sake of economic and social development in the region, study of problems related to the economic development of the region, technical assistance to member countries, development of trade and economic relations of member countries.

Information about cooperation between Azerbaijan and the organization

· The Republic of Azerbaijan became a member of UNESCAP on 30th July, 1992, and is included in the UNESCAP subregion for North and Central Asia.

· The Republic of Azerbaijan regularly prepares the Economic and Social Review of UNESCAP for Asia and the Pacific and submits it to the organization. The review reflects macroeconomic indicators, economic and social policy areas, as well as economic growth, inflation, trade and investment, financial markets, employment, migration and remittances, fiscal balance, financial sector development and balance of payments position, and other issues.

· UNESCAP is the founder of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) together with the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Republic of Azerbaijan actively participates in the program. Azerbaijan is the chairman country in SPECA in 2023.
