Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

 

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was established in 1945. FAO’s headquarters are located in Rome. The current Director-General, Qu Dongyu, undertook his functions on 23 June 2019. Achieving food security for all is at the core of FAO's efforts – to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. FAO aims at to improve nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, raise the standard of living in rural populations and contribute to global economic growth. FAO is operational in 191 countries. FAO has delegations in over 130 countries. Azerbaijan is a member of FAO since October 20, 1995. Melek Cakmak is Head of FAO’s Partnership and Liasion Office in Azerbaijan. Project coordination office of the FAO in Azerbaijan is operational since 2007. During this period, several projects by FAO were implemented in Azerbaijan. The co-ordination office will carry out the Office of the Partnership and Co-operation in Azerbaijan from autumn 2015. During its membership in the FAO, the Government of Azerbaijan received support from the FAO for the implementation of various development and emergency preparedness projects in order to increase productivity in agriculture, as well as to implement and accelerate agricultural reform and to address a number of challenges to food security in the country. Currently the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) carries out 12 projects in Azerbaijan.
