United Nations agencies and organizations
The Republic of Azerbaijan is a member of the United Nations since March 2, 1992. During these years, our country had took close part in the activities of the various specialized agencies of United Nations, was widely represented in the General Assembly and task forces in the capacity of experts. Azerbaijan was elected, to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms in 2011. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Special Program for Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) are worth to note in the terms of the development of economic relations and Azerbaijan integration to the United Nations' agencies.
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
General information: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)- was founded in 1966 by the General Assembly of United Nations. Since its establishment, UNIDO has focused on solving problems on industrial issues of governments, business associations and private companies. UNIDO is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development and cooperation from January 1, 1986. Currently, 172 countries are members of this organization.
Objection: To promote and accelerate sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies, to improve competitively industrial production, to help the creation of international industrial partners, to strengthen the industrial development related to the equitable and environmental responsibility of society.
Cooperation with Azerbaijan: The Republic of Azerbaijan is a member of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization since 1993. Within the framework of the organization Azerbaijan signed "Memorandum on cooperation in the field of industrial development "in 2000."The Framework Program on Cooperation for 2005-2010" was signed between Azerbaijan and Organization in 2005. Different projects are carried out in various areas, including energy efficiency to be increased, development of the national industrial statistics programs, supporting small and medium entrepreneurship, improvement of the environment and etc. by the organization. Kandeh Yumkella, the General Director of the organization paid a visit to Azerbaijan in July 2010.
The regional seminars on industrial parks are planned to organize by the UNIDO in Azerbaijan in the on 17-18 of April, 2012.
Azerbaijan was invited to participate as an expert in the second phase of the conference to be held in Slovenia in 2014.
Currently, the negotiations on the signing of the frame document to cover the years of 2013-2017 between Azerbaijan and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) are carried out.
Special Program for Economies of Central Asia (SPECA)
General information: The United Nations Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) is a jointly measure of UN with Central Asian countries with economies in transition. The main objections and activities were reflected at the Tashkent Declaration adopted on 26 March 1998.
Participant of program: United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.
Program objects: To support integration and promote the joining of the region's countries to the world economy, to allure domestic and foreign resources for financing priority issues, to apply more effectively the standards and norms of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in region states.
SPECA and Azerbaijan: Azerbaijan became a member of SPECA in the 4th session of the Regional Advisory Committee held in Bishkek on 28-29 November, 2002. The 1st meeting of the Management Board of the program and the Business Forum was held in 2006 in Baku. The Meeting of Ministers on joining the initiative for the Trade Support mechanism proposed in 2007 by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economic Development was held in Baku on 1-2 December 2010.
On 26-28 November, 2012, the 7th meeting of the Board of Governors of the SPECA, including the 7th session of Project Working Group on Trade and Economic Forum were held in Bangkok, the city of Thailand. The representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Industry attended these events.
On July 8-11, 2013 the event on trade assistance project of SPECA member states was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The national development plan and preparation of its improved form for the year 2014 was discussed at the event. The representative of the Ministry of Economy and Industry attended the meeting.
On November 19-22, 2013 within the "SPECA Week" the 8th session of the SPECA Governing Council and 2013 SPECA Economic Forum were held in Almaty.
The regional meeting on promotion and financing of innovative green technologies was held in Kazakhstan. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Industry.
United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development
General information. United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development is planned to hold by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Rio de Janeiro on June of 2012. UN member states compiled "Progress Report" reflected the social economic development obtained by the countries in order to the MDGs, defined the needs on development, cooperation priorities for solution of them in the "Rio+20" final document of Conference.
At the meetings of the Conference on Sustainable Development held in 1992 and 2002, relevantly in Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg, more than 100 heads of states and governments from the 172 member countries. The main objective of the conference is to ensure of political commitment for sustainable development, assess the gaps in the implementation of decisions of the main summits held on sustainable development and success and progress obtained up now, including, to investigate new forthcoming tasks. The Conference were dedicated to the poverty eradication and co-operation opportunities of countries in the context of sustainable development and progress obtained at the implementation of the commitments taken by UN member states by estimating the role and contribution of the UN system organizations.
Azerbaijan's participation at the conference: The delegation headed by First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov represented the Republic of Azerbaijan at the Conference. The Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Niyazi Safarov also attended the meeting.
On November 6-8, 2013, the Regional Consultation meeting on the Post-2015 Development Agenda was jointly organized by the UNECE and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Azerbaijan was represented by the delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Sevinj Hasanova.
